Pius Schwizer wins Championship of Leipzig…

Pius Schwizer and Coolgirl

Pius Schwizer and Coolgirl looking rather textbook

Well like Edwina said, this week in Leipzig has seen drastically different tracks then what the riders saw in Basel, Switzerland last weekend. The track today for the 1.50 Championship of Leipzig was very technical, but like the World’s leading lady rider observed, with moderate height. The track used the size of the ring to full advantage this afternoon but we were all surprised not to see more clear.

DSC_4545It was the Leipzig planks, set at the far end of the ring that would prove most challenging for many riders. Like much of the course, the twists and turns demanded the horses to adjust quickly.

Pius Schwizer, one of Switzerland’s most consistent competitors, would prove to have the strongest time with his petite grey mare, Coolgirl. The jump off track allowed for plenty of pace and riders had to gallop the length of the ring, which meant a quick pace for the German audience.

Only five combinations were able to qualify through to the jump off; Luca Maria Moneta (ITA), Sergio Alvarez Moya (ESP), Pius Schwizer (SUI), Mario Stevens (GER) and Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS).

Luca was first in aboard the big-hearted Connery. This pint-sized pocket rocket barely stands at 1.60 meters, which means he is almost a pony. But like Luca told me, he has a huge heart and plenty of scope, despite is short stature. Even Edwina agreed, commenting on the small little bay’s incredible scope and lively nature.

In fact, Connery was a gift to Luca because he was considered too dangerous and wild. Luca explained that he worked with the little bay towards calming him and attempting to harness all his blood. Well, it seems the talented Italian is well on his way to harnessing quite a talent. Clearly having no problem with the height, the world’s leading lady rider said that Connery could be quite a competitor. Luca, who rides the horse in a plain D-ring bit, is known on the international circuit for managing eccentric equine personalities and bringing the best out of unconventional mounts.

So Luca set a time of 37.44 seconds, certainly fast and very efficient, so there was plenty of talk ringside, whether the time could be beat. Western European World Cup leading rider, Sergio Alvarez Moya, was next in the ring with Wisconsin. The Spaniard gave it all he had but paid the price with an unfortunate rail aboard the big bodied dark bay.

Next in was Pius Schwizer and like clockwork, the Swiss Olympian set a very fast time of 35.79 seconds, aboard the lovely Westphalian mare Coolgirl. It was fast and efficient, taking advantage of every turn in traditional Schwizer-style. The crowd cheered him on as he finished the course, knowing full well we had likely just seen our winner.

Only two left to go; Germany’s very own Mario Stevens and the World’s leading lady rider Edwina Tops-Alexander. Mario put in a good effort, but unfortunately had two fences down with Little Pezi. Lastly but certainly not least, Edwina came in on her aptly named black stallion Guccio. Clocking in at 38.19 seconds was enough to give the star Australian jockey a third place finish.

Guccio, who is the first horse Gucci has ever invested in, is the traditional black stallion. The 11 year old Dutch-bred by Quick Star is a favorite of Edwina’s, who has been working with the explosive stallion for just over a year now. Previously ridden by Maikel van der Vlueten, the 11 year old stallion is destined for great things confirms Alexander. Confirming in the press conference that this talented mount could be a possible horse for Charlotte Casiraghi in the future. Adorned in Gucci tack and colors, one can easily imagine the pairing. But for now, we are happy to see these two together. An lovely couple they certainly make!

Congratulations to Pius Schwizer for a very speedy win, as usual. We hope you like your new red Citroen.

Penelope wins Citroen Grand Prix and takes home a car…

France’s darling certainly put on a show for us last night. The leggy jockey picked up speed and set a time that would prove too difficult to match, taking full advantage of her late start in the 1.50 World Cup Qualifier sponsored by Citroen.

Penelope even managed to beat her partner and France’s leading rider, Kevin Staut, and win a red Citroen that matched Leprevost’s stunning red jacket. Nice Stephanie, who was sold by Ashford Farms last April to Haras de Clarbec, was escorted into the ring by Penelope’s groom Julie Martiijn. But the sensitive Swedish bred mare managed to stay on her best behavior through out the awards ceremony.

The course was a tough one, naturally, as it was the only qualifying opportunity for Sunday’s World Cup. The track, set against the clock, proved most difficult at 10a and b, where riders tried to make up time by turning sharp to the vertical-oxer double combination and often getting the back rail of the oxer as a result.

Penelope Leprevost (FRA) and Nice Stephanie won with a time of 64.40 seconds

Luciana Diniz, who one last week’s CSI5* event in Basel, Switzerland, put on a great show with her gelding Lacontino. The Portuguese beauty led he class for quite some time before Leprevost snapped it up. Home crowd favorites Marco Kutscher, Marcus Ehning and Ludger Beerbaum finished second, sixth and seventh respectfully, with a particularly nice round from Marco and his reasonably new mount Spartacus. The 10 year old stallion, previously ridden by Eric Van der Vlueten, shows to be quite the talent for the future.

Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) and Cabrio van de Hefffinck

Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) and Cabrio van de Hefffinck

19 year old Manuel Anon was the youngest of the group, finishing 5th overall with a superb round aboard Qlymp d’Ivraie. Trained by Gilbert de Roock, this young man is incredibly composed at the shows, especially impressive considering he only turns 20 years old in July. Other notable young talents were Belgium’s twin brothers; 19 year old Nicola and Olivier Philippaerts. Nicola was riding Cortez, previously ridden by Lisa de Ridder and Olivier was riding his CN International Grand Prix winning mount, Cabrio van de Heffinck.

The Belgian’s were almost sure Olivier would serve up the first clear for Belgian with Cabrio clearing the 1.50 with significant ease. But alas, the exuberant grey stallion’s efforts got the better of him, tapping the last fence with an eccentric kick to clear it.

All in all, it was a good class and Frank Rothenberger (GER) gave everyone a good feeling for what to expect on Sunday. The German course designer made full use of the considerable size of the ring, allowing riders to pick up the pace and make up some time on course. Which should make for an entertaining jump off on Sunday for the German crowd.

Tonight we have the six bar competition which should prove to be very entertaining. Let’s see how high tonight’s rider’s can manage to get.

Congratulations to Penelope Leprevost and her team! Well done!

Roger Yves Bost wins LE Cup in Leipzig…

Bosty wins in leipzig friday

Well no surprise here… Bosty and Castle Forbes Cosma flew in to win tonight’s LE Cup 1.45 with a very fast time of 51.80 seconds.

Almost 3 seconds faster then Germany’s Mario Stevens. The German crowd were happy to see one of their own on top but no one was surprised about Bosty’s time.

However, what was surprising was that this year is the first time Roger has shown here in Leipzig. Both Pius Schwizer and Rob Whitaker commented on Bosty’s speedy mount, knowing full well that after the chestnut mare jumped clean, it would be difficult to catch her.

Rob was very happy with USA Today’s performance but remarked that he intends on starting Catwalk in the World Cup on Sunday. “That is the plan anyways” said Rob, “but with horses it can always change.”

It was a solid start to the weekend with some great rounds from Simon Delestre and Valentino Velvet as well as Ludger Beerbaum and Zinedine. The start list was filled with plenty of combinations preparing for Sunday’s 9th World Cup event on the FEI calender.

Tonight will be the first qualifier for Sunday’s World Cup so no doubt everyone will be taking full advantage of the few hours we have to relax before the 1.50 Speed class gets underway at 9:00 pm tonight.

Goodluck to everyone tonight!
