Mathy Jr. wins Mechelen Masters….

francois mathy jr

Well sure enough, it was the cream of the crop last night in Mechelen. Ten riders, amongst a great collection of talent here in Belgium, were selected to compete against one another for a brand new Landrover and the title of the 2012 Mechelen Landrover Master. The course was short, only 7 fences in total, with modest height to start with. But as the class progressed, the jumps became bigger as each rider was required to select one fence in each round to raise. So naturally, you had a great advantage if you started at the beginning of the order.

There were seven Olympic riders amongst the collection; including two of this year’s Gold medalists. Team Gold medalist Scott Brash was riding Ursula, a horse previously ridden by Tina Fletcher, and Olympic champion Steve Guerdat was riding his grey gelding Chips. Belgium’s World Champion was also amongst the proven talent to grace the start list, he was riding his bay gelding Once De Kreisker. Father-son combination Ludo and Nicola Philippaerts were amongst the five riders representing Belgium.

It was a class that started slowly but picked up plenty of pace, as the jumps got bigger and bigger. Belgium’s top ranked rider, Gregory Wathelet, was the only rider not to make it through to the second round. The second round proved to be uneventful as every rider kept the fences up and moved on to the third round.

In the third round it was only Nicola Philippaerts with Vadetta vh Mettenhof who knocked one fence down. Eight riders remained for the fourth round as the course kept getting bigger and bigger. Unfortunately for family Philippaerts, Nicola’s father Ludo would follow his son with four faults aboard Denver van’t Goemanshof. Seven riders remained.

For the fifth and final round, it was time for the jump-off. Everyone revved up their engines, for it was time to jump the same track but with minimal time. Dutchman Harrie Smolders and Exquis Walnut de Muze were first to go and as expected, Harrie did not tap the breaks once. Doing so, gave him the fastest time of the day at 35,68 seconds, but the second element of the double combination would be the result. France’s leading lady, Penelope Leprevost and Quelmec du Gery followed, also with four faults.

Our Olympic champion, Steve Guerdat, entered the ring looking determined as ever. Sure enough his determination paid off! Chips VI jumped quick and easy, leaving all the fences up and clocking in a time of 36, 64 seconds. Steve was in the lead as reigning World Champion Philippe Le Jeune entered the ring with Once de Kreisker. Talk about heavy hitters!!

Unfortunately for Philippe, Once de Kreisker grazed the first fence as well as the second element of the combination to rack up a disappointing 8 faults.

Then there was three!! Scott, Francois and Denis…

Scott Brash was sure to go fast but after a misunderstanding in the turn to the combination, Ursula refused and Scott had to circle. They jumped the combination successfully on their second try before Scott chose to retire. Fashioned in red, Belgium’s Francois Mathy Jr was next with Polinska des Isles and it was clear that Francois had ever intention of winning for the home crowd! Sure enough, the roof nearly blew off as the Belgian crowd erupted with applause. Francois took over the lead with a time of 36, 30; 0,36 seconds faster than Steve Guerdat.

So it was Ireland’s Denis Lynch and Julia Hargreaves Vedor who were last to go. The lights were dimmed as he entered the ring, but surprisingly they stayed dimmed.

Huh!! Was this a malfunction or would the lights remain dimmed for Denis’ entire round? Sure enough, it seemed that the lighting director was rooting for Francois as the lights remained dimmed; it was almost too dark to see. Denis would need to ride in the dark and attempt a time faster then Mathy Jr.. You could barely see the second fence; a grey vertical flush against the rail. But no matter, Denis would not be phased as he picked up a steady pace to the first fence. Denis cleared the entire track and tried his best to chase the leading time but his time stopped at 30,69 seconds which placed him just behind Steve and Francois at number three.

A big congratulations to Francois for his super effort last night. The 2012 Landrover Masters Champion!!!

All three Philippaerts land in the Rolex Top 100….

Philippaerts_2012_11_28

The performance of famed Belgian Olympian Ludo Philippaerts and his twin sons Nicola and Olivier have ensured that for the first time all three Philippaerts rank within the top 100 in the world (FEI Rolex World rankings).

As the 2012 season draws to a close, there are seven Belgians riders ranked in the top 100. Gregory Wathelet is the highest ranked Belgian in 30th position. Ludo Philippaerts is in 48th place and is the second highest ranked Belgian in the world at the moment.

“Even though this is only a snapshot, I am proud of our achievements. It indicates that the three of us last year internationally performed well. In November, I was second in Lyon, Nicola won this year as the youngest rider ever Super League match in Falsterbo and Olivier won the prestigious jumping at Spruce Meadows. In October, the boys put a big step forward in their careers during their internship in the United States.”

“I realize that Nicola and Olivier are coming, but they will work hard to do their best for me to catch up. On my 49th, I look not back, on the contrary. I want to increase the ranking although I realize that sometimes it is difficult to get my second place in the early 2000s to emulate.”

Nicola Philippaerts is 66th in the world, while his twin brother Olivier is on the 95th place after winning the 2012 CN International Grand Prix at the Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament in September. Olivier became the youngest rider to win the CN International title while Nicola became the youngest rider to win the Super league event in Falsterbo.

“The ranking is not that important, that is the case when you are in the top 30 is. It is a reflection of our international performance and motivation to continue. Now I’m in the top 100, I would do better and stepwise progression continue. “

The Philippaerts family are based in Limburg, Belgium and host an international stable that stands as one of the most well-respected competition stables in Belgium. Ludo along with Olivier and Nicola will be attending the World Cup event in Mechelen, Belgium, which begins on the 26th of December.

Nicola Philippaerts remains in the US while Olivier takes on Paris…

Well Olivier Philippaerts is in Paris this week for the annual Gucci Masters; one of France’s most highly anticipated social events of the year. Olivier will be amongst fellow Belgian’s Gregory Wathelet and Judy-Ann Melchior for the five star event, set to get underway tomorrow. However, it seems that Olivier left his twin brother State side after Toronto’s Royal Winter Fair this month.

While Olivier has returned to Europe for the remaining season on the continent, it seems that Nicola has opted to remain competing in the United States, entered in the World Cup Qualifying event, ESP Holiday & Horses CSI2** in Palm Beach, Florida this week with his horses Vadetta VH Mettenhof (seen above) Cortez, Chicago v/h Moleneind. Nicola finished 9th in the $33,000 Holiday and Horses Opener Grand Prix today.

Ludo also flew over to join his son and finished 26th on Chicago. Lauren Hough won the Grand Prix on her very own Ohlala, beating the likes of Tiffany Foster, Richie Moloney, Daniel Bluman, Mario Deslauriers, Shane Sweetnam and Margie Engle, just to name a few.

According to the Philippaerts team, this will be Nicola’s last show in the United States and the 19 year old Belgian jockey will return home for the annual World Cup horse show in Mechelen, which starts just after Christmas. Nicola will join his brother Olivier and his father, Ludo, for the 5star competition. We’re looking forward to seeing all three together for one of Belgium’s most legendary shows. The famous trio have not competed together since the Spruce Meadows Masters in September where Olivier won the $1 Million CN International Grand Prix.

We’ll be wishing the Belgian trio very good luck next month.

Who’s at the Royal…

Well before Brianne Goutal gets to telling us how everything is going across the Atlantic, perhaps we should look and see who made the trip to one of Canada’s most well-known and popular horse shows. The 90th Royal Horse Show looks to host a great variety of international riders. They will compete this week in afternoon and evening competitions including the $100,000 Hickstead FEI World Cup Grand Prix today, the $50,000 Weston Canadian Open on Friday and the $75,000 Ricoh Big Ben Challenge on Saturday.

The riders who are representing our home squad are ten-time Olympian Ian Millar (Perth, ON), three-time back-to-back Canadian showjumping champion Yann Candele (Caledon, ON), Olympian Jill Henselwood (Oxford Mills, ON), Olympian and Rolex One-to-Watch Mac Cone (King, ON), past Canadian champion Ainsley Vince (Burlington, ON), Angela Covert (St. Lazare, QC) and two riders who jumped their way into the big-money week via the Greenhawk Canadian showjumping championships: Isabelle Lapierre (Breakeyville, QC) and Neil Badcock (King City, ON).

The American teams from South of the border are always weighted with talent and this year will be no exception. In addition to the lovely Brianne Goutal who just arrived in Toronto, riders who will be fashioning red, white and blue are two-time Olympic team gold medalist McLain Ward (Brewster, NY) and Olympic team gold medalist Laura Kraut (Wellington, FL). Kent Farrington (Chicago, IL) is also in Toronto and will certainly be someone to watch out for, Kent is known for his speed and if he has “Little Grey” with him then he will surely be in the top 5. Regular rock star Olympian Reed Kessler (Armonk, NY) and rising star Jessica Springsteen will be making their debuts in Toronto this week for both ladies have never been to the Royal Winter Fair before.

Additional international riders include 2002 World Champion Dermott Lennon of Ireland, fellow Irish riders Conor Swail who just left us in Lyon, Richie Moloney and Shane Sweetnam, and Belgium’s twin brothers Nicola and Olivier Philippaerts. We all remember this fall in Calgary, when Olivier won the $1,000,000 CN International Grand Prix with Cabrio… that was one great day!! London Olympian Daniel Bluman will also be a consistent feature in the International ring this week.

Big movers and shakers…

Well the new Rolex World Rankings have just come out today and there are some big movers and shakers amongst the top 100. Olympic gold medalist Jeroen Dubbeldam moved 19 spots to number 44 in the world. Jeroen has just lost his lead in the World Cup standings after his absence was felt in Lyon this past weekend but alas you can be assured the Dutchman won’t be too worried, there is still Verona, Italy this week, Stuttgart in Germany the following week along with Geneva, Switzerland, London Olympia, Mechelen in Belgium just after Christmas, Leipzig in Germany, Zurich, Bordeaux in France and  ‘s-Hertogenbosch in Holland before the Finals in Gothenburg, Sweden.

History-maker Reed Kessler broke the top 50 this month, moving 7 places into 49th place in the world. At 19 years of age, Reed stands as the youngest rider in the top 50. Next to her in age is number 42 in the World, Dutch Olympic silver medalist Maikel van der Vlueten, who at 24 years old was the youngest rider to stand on the Olympic podium this summer. When you talk with Maikel you would never guess that he hasn’t even reached his 25th birthday and yet he has already accomplished so much. Quite a cool guy!!

Nicola Philippaerts, son of Belgian Olympian Ludo Philippaerts, jumped up 19 spots also to make it to number 63 in the World. The 19 year old star is currently in Toronto, Canada with his twin brother, Olivier Philippaerts for the Royal Winter Fair. The twin brothers have been enjoying their North American tour which included Harrisburg, Washington, Kentucky and Toronto.

The most impressive move within the top one-hundred in the world was American Christine McCrea who moved from 110th place to 82nd. Christine was a big feature at the Pan American Games last year in Mexico and no doubt you will remember that she took both Team and the Individual gold medal home to East Windsor, CT.

So what do we know about Christine? Well, Christine McCrea first made her presence known on the international scene when she joined the United States Equestrian Team Developing Rider Tour in 1999, she finished second in the Nations Cup competition at CSIO Lummen, Belgium, riding Caraibe du Moulin. Last year was a successful year for the Connecticut native, Over the summer,  McCrea travelled to Europe to take part in the FEI Nations Cup Series.

With Romantovich Take One, she produced a double clear effort over a tough track in St. Gallen in the Nations Cup and two days later jumped to a strong third place finish in the Longines Grand Prix of Switzerland. McCrea and Romantovich Take One dominated the 2011 Pan American Games Guadalajara, Mexico taking both Team and Individual Gold Medals. The pair finished with only 0.88 penalties. McCrea continued her success this year by finishing ninth with Romantovich Take One in the USEF Selection Last week in Lexington, Christine finished 2nd in the World Cup with her Dutch Gelding Romantovich Take One.

Nicely done guys!!!

In the top 200…

  • Clarissa Crotta (SUI) moved 40 spots to 109th in the world
  • Eiken Sato (JAP) moved up 55 spots to 165th in the world
  • Tim Gredley (GBR) did the same and jumped into the top 200 landing in 188th place

Who’s In Kentucky this week….

So whose going to the Alltech National Horse show in Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Well Olympians Beezie Madden, Laura Kraut, Reed Kessler, Margie Engle, Daniel Bluman and Matt Williams will be in attendance.
Everyone will surely be hoping that Hurricane Sandy stays well away from the famous Alltech Arena, made famous by the 2010 World Equestrian Games where Belgium’s Philippe Le Jeune became World Champion.
A few of the riders took a few days to enjoy some sunnier sky’s in Florida. Nicola and Olivier Philippaerts enjoyed one days rest in Florida before making it back to Kentucky to prepare for the World Cup ranking event.
