We had an easy day today. We all hacked our horses and they all were fresh and happy.

The most excitement we had today was our car having a flat tire. We had a good team bonding experience replacing it on the side of the road outside the show!

We have drawn last to go in the Nations cup tomorrow which is great! The Americans will lead it off.

Our team order is Jenn first, Tamie second, Myself third and Francois as our anchor. I cannot wait for it! I wish everyone the best of luck tomorrow and may the best team win!

Met Marcus this morning at the Hotel. He drove his Lorry with Kay to Verona. We had a good Italian breakfast with cappuccino than I went to the show and he went to bed!!!

OMG, Richard Spooner’s truck hit a bunch of wild pigs in Italy, avoided many but still caught a few. Pork chops on the axles. No truffels!!!

Michael Whitaker looking jealous at the Ringmaster’s new hair!!!

Brianne writes from the Royal…

Onira jumped amazingly last night! I was so mad at myself when I came out of the ring! The triple combination was a hard one and caught a lot of the riders. I had the B effort of the triple combination down because I under-rode the width of the oxer. Thus the fault was full rider error, and I kept replaying my mistake in my mind. So so mad at myself!

The course was big and Onira played around the rest of the track, which made the fault that much more annoying!
Michel Vaillancourt is course designing this week and I feel that he is one of our best designers. He really has a feel for what he has to build and fashions tracks not only according to standard but also to his field of riders and horse combinations. Also, I learned last night that he was the first Canadian athlete (yes, general athlete!) to win an individual Olympic medal. That is amazing!

All his tracks this week have been spot on in terms of number of clear rounds and last night was no exception. We saw six clear rounds that began with Olivier Philippaerts. He is young, but rides incredibly well. I always like to see my friends go clear and give it a go! The jump off course was very complicated, equipped with a lot of roll-backs and awkward or tricky angles. I thought all of the riders had excellent rounds, which is rare. Conor had one down with Landsdowne but he jumped beautifully in both rounds. Jill Henselwood won going last. The packed stands were very enthusiastic all night and it was great for them that a Canadian clinched the victory!

Today is a quiet day for me and Onira. I may not even ride him, I have not decided yet. I want to keep him very fresh for Saturday night and the Big Ben Challenge. There are a few classes to watch though so I am going to head over to the exhibition center to see the happenings. I am considering a trip to the Science Center a bit later. Yes I am totally nerdy but I hear it is one of the best in North America, so why not?

Photos of Onira… clearly he does not have any boundaries.

Jill Henselwood wins Hickstead World Cup in Toronto…

Two-time Canadian Olympic team member Jill Henselwood won the FEI Hickstead World Cup Grand Prix at the Royal Winter Fair last night in Toronto. The crowd were on their feet for their Canadian Olympic medalist, who won the class which honors her fellow team mate for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Jill attended the 2008 Olympic Games with her fellow rider Eric Lamaze and his world-famous mount Hickstead. Fresh from the Jump Canada Sports Hall of Fame dinner, which took place on Sunday evening, which honored the notorious stallion, this seems only an all true fitting conclusion to last night’s well attended event.

George ventured to London this summer with Jill for the Olympic Games at Greenwich Park. The combination joined Eric Lamaze and Derly Chin de Muze, Tiffany Foster and Victor as well as Ian Millar and Star Power for her second Olympic performance. They finished 47th overall in the Individual finals along side Penelope Leprevost (FRA) and Reed Kessler (USA). The pair made their International debut last April in Lummen, Belgium and earned their first win last July at CSI3*-W in Bromont, QC. They were members of this year’s Nations Cup Team in Lummen, Belgium where they landed in 2nd place along with Olympic team mates Tiffany Foster, Ian Millar and Yann Candele.

Last night’s win is the second International win for the combination and their very first 5*star Grand Prix win.

In addition to the Olympic combinations present in the pack of 22 entries, Jessica Springsteen and her newly acquired Vindicat W landed in 8th place which marks the best result for the new combination so far. Jessica debuted her new Gelding, previously ridden by Peter Charles and Olympic gold medal winner this August, in St. Lo in October before bringing him back state side for the World Cup events in Washington and Lexington, Kentucky. It seems the pair are slowly moving their way up in the standings and at this rate, they’ll be winning in no time.

Ireland’s Richie Moloney and CN International Winner Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) were the most competitive foreigners. Richie, who bases himself in the United States had a very successful Nations Cup season in Europe this summer. He was member of both winning Nations Cup teams in Hickstead and Dublin aboard Ahorn Van De Zuuthoeve. 19 year old Belgian rider Olivier Philippaerts has truly had a season he will never forget. Olivier ventured to London this summer as Reserve rider for the Belgian Olympic team, just before joining all of us in Calgary to make the biggest win of his career; the $1 Million CN International Grand Prix. He became the youngest rider to win the title… ever!

Our very own Brianne Goutal, who is writing from Toronto this week, landed in 10th place , just ahead of 2002 World Champion Dermott Lennon of Ireland, riding her very own Onira, a horse she has had for 10 years!! They are a great combination and had some good results with a win in Washington and two 2nd place finishes at CSI5*-NC Barcelona and Gijion.
