Jerome Guery is the 2012 Belgian Champion….

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I present to you Jerome Guery, this year’s Belgian Champion. The well-known championship took place at Zangersheide this weekend in Lanaken with sixteen riders entering to compete for the highly regarded title here in Belgium. Guery’s won the 1.50 Prix riding his 9 year old stallion, Tic-Tac du Seigneur.

World Champion Philippe Le Jeune landed in second place behind Jerome on a his own Carlino STX. The bronze medal went to Rik Hemeryck on Papillon Z.

It was an exciting class and I thoroughly enjoyed the outstanding atmosphere. Zangersheide offers the ultimate Belgian experience with a very passionate crowd and plenty of Belgian beer. So it is defiantly a must-visit if your in the area this time next year.

The stands were packed and every viable corner around the famous white sand ring was occupied. The cheers were loud when Jerome won the famed title. Jerome is a national favorite and very popular amongst his peers. Jerome is currently ranked 158th in the world on the Rolex Rankings, alongside riders such as Pilar Cordon (ESP), Vincent Voorn (NED) and Olivier Philippaerts (BEL).

Hunter’s Scendix wins Sires of the World in Lanaken….

Hunter’s Scendix is the Sire of the World once again….

Hunter’s Scendix is this year’s winner of the FEI Sires of the World at the World Championships hosted by Zangersheide. The lovely black stallion was the 2011 Winner and this year he proved that the title still remains his. The Hannovarian stallion won the warm up class on Friday. The Belgian rider, Brecht Bille has been riding the lovely stallion for the last two months after the two reunited this summer.

You might remember that the stallion was competing for the Canadian flag under Eric Lamaze since December of last year however the two have parted ways and the famed stallion made his way back home to the Hunter’s Stud Farm run by Ludwig Lemenu and Simon Riquière.

The stallion is off to a good start, or should I say restart, with his previous jockey winning one of this year’s most-prized award. No doubt there will be a spike in the demand for this young stallion, who is only 9 years old.

Scendix had great results with the Belgian rider. Under the training of Bille, Hunter’s Scendix was Swiss Champion at 4 years old, Bronze medal World Champion at 5 years old and LRV champion at 6 years old.

53 stallions lined up for the 1,50 Prix and the crowds had to wait for a long time before there was a clear round. In the end only seven combinations successfully cleared the course.

A big congratulations to Brecht, Ludwig Lemenu and Simon Riquière.

Horse of the Week….

Coriana Van Klapscheut

You might never be able to spell her name correctly but you can always pick this lively chestnut mare out from a crowd. This pint-sized personality has come out from behind the shadow of Eric’s stallion Hickstead, one of history’s greatest horses, to prove that she too has something to bring to the table.

Coriana is the epitomy of a chestnut mare. She has more personality then many horses put together. But it is this personality that has allowed this 10 year old Belgian-bred mare to come leaps and bounds from when Eric Lamaze and Stephan Conter found her three years ago.

Stephan Conter, of Stephex Stables, found this little ball of energy as a 7 year old and Eric Lamaze and Artisan Farms bought her just before the summer series at Spruce Meadows. She was incredibly green and 5 weeks of competition at Spruce Meadows for the Summer series was a lot to ask of the young mare but, as you can imagine, this fighter was up to the challenge and she excelled under the intensity of international competition. She made such incredible progress in just 5 weeks that she returned to Belgium to win the 7 year olds in Valkenswaard.

Next stop: Rio de Janeiro…

Mark your calenders everyone, next month the Sociedade Hípica Brasileira becomes the center of the equestrian world, with the commencement of the Athina Onassis Horse Show in Rio de Janeiro. This annual event will give everyone a taste of what exciting eclectic events are to come for the 2016 Olympic games in four years time.

Organized as one of the leading equestrian events in the world and hosted by one of Brazil’s leading riders, the Athina Onassis Horse Show draws to Brazil some of the biggest stars of our sport. Hosted by Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto, it is arguably the most popular horse show in Brazil.

The competition serves as a great encouragement to the national equestrian sport in Brazil, since it allows visitors to get up close and personal to “the world’s best”, matched against Brazil’s national favorites such as Carlos Ribas, Alvaro de Miranda Neto; aka Doda and of course, none other then Olympic champion Rodrigo Pessoa.

Mr. Miranda was greatly impressed with the organization in Greenwich Park London. “The efforts of the British deserve all honors. They were wonderful games. Everything was perfect: the ground, the obstacles, the challenges of the course and naturally the atmosphere!”

Something the 39 year-old Olympic bronze medalist would like to adopt some of this for his own horse show in Rio de Janeiro next month during the sixth  annual OI Athina Onassis Horse Show from the 5th to the 7th of October in Brazil with a budget of roughly 5.5 million Euro.

This makes the horse show one of the highest prized events worldwide. But it involves much more than just show jumping. Music, fashion and highly-elaborate highlights will be on offer. All of which shall turn this event into one of this year’s highly sought-after international social events.

“As a horse show rider I have been able to experience how different the events are over so many years” says Doda. In a little notebook the conscientious jockey has recorded his observations about events he has attended through out the world. “During my own horse show I shall try to realize everything I liked in all those years.”

Doda, currently ranked 19th in the world, not only cares about the horses and his fellow riders, he is also particularly concerned about the grooms. “It is ultimately they, who devotedly care for our animals all day.” The handlers are very well accommodated during the OI Athina Onassis Horse Show, the schedule ensures that also they have a break every now and then; there is also an appropriate welcome present for everyone.

The sport of show jumping is gaining popularity in Brazil. This popularity is set to grow as we draw closer to the next Olympics. Rio de Janerio shall host the next Olympic Summer Games in 2016 and the interest of television stations and sponsors will be enormous. At the center of such interest will no doubt be Brazil’s ultimate show jumping ambassadors; Doda and Rodrigo.

“My wife and I are trying to promote the riding sport in my home country as best as we can”, explains Doda. His wife, 27 year old Athina Onassis de Miranda, acts as Patron of the event. Athina, born in France, is the sole heiress to her late grandfather Aristotle Onassis and rides for Greece.

Doda with wife Athina

Doda is the chief organizer of next month’s event but in addition, for the last five years he also looked after a project for disadvantaged families in São Paolo, the Associação Paulista de Apoio a Família (APAF). According to the NGO, women are vital in addressing the problems and grievances within poverty-stricken families. Therefore, this is where APAF concentrate their efforts. Proceeds of next months prestigious event go directly towards Associação Paulista de Apoio a Família (APAF).

Doda and Athina married in 2005, thus becoming one of show jumping’s most powerful and influential couples. Athina is heiress to one of the world’s largest shipping dynasty’s and he is one of Brazil’s leading international riders. Together, they are using their extensive resources for the greater good.

Next on the GCT list…. Abu Dhabi….

The Global Champions Tour has left Vienna with the most exciting finale to the season ready to be played out in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in November.

GCT Abu Dhabi will be the focus of the show jumping world as the top riders head to the Middle East with the closest ranking battle in the history of the series. Edwina Tops-Alexander and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson are neck and neck on points – but Edwina currently has the edge with her 40-point highest score win from Doha at the start of the year. It will be an epic duel between the two champion riders at the Al Forsan International Sports Resort.

Abu Dhabi

Global Champions Tour heads to the Arabian Gulf for the final round of 2012 from November 22-24. For the second year the Al Forsan International Sports Resort will host this prestigious climax to the season.
The superb facilities from stabling to grandstands and the stylish VVIP and VIP areas maintain the high standards of GCT’s international circuit. And Al Forsan also offers extra fun for visitors ranging from Go Karting to paintball, tennis and motorsports, wakeboarding and water-skiing.
Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a premier international sporting destination continues to accelerate as it increasingly hosts world class events including golf, tennis, sailing and, of course, show jumping. Away from sport, the Emirate is driving some of the most exciting, cutting edge architectural projects in the world today.
And leisure facilities from the Monte Carlo Beach Club, Ferrari World and the stunning Cipriani restaurant at Yas Island Marina, where the Formula One race takes place, are proving to be a magnet for international visitors.
